The enclosed disk contains Version 2.4 of MacOberon . This software is copyrighted, but may be distributed free of charge for non-commercial purposes. Please read the copyright message within the program for details.
MacOberon requires a Macintosh equipped with a Motorola 68020 processor (or higher) and a floating-point coprocessor . It will not run on Macintosh Classic computers. However, it does run on the Macintosh Quadra with caching enabled, and on the Macintosh IIsi if one of several widely available public-domain INITs is used to emulate the floating-point coprocessor which is lacking on this Macintosh model. MacOberon prefers to run under System 7 but is backward-compatible with releases 5 and 6 of the Macintosh operating system.
Instead of sending output to a printing device directly, MacOberon generates PostScript output, which may be downloaded to any compatible printer using the LaserWriter Font Utility supplied with System 7. QuickDraw printers are not supported. The PostScript output generated by MacOberon is completely self-contained and does not rely on the contents of Apple’s LaserPrep file.
Installing MacOberon
MacOberon is distributed in a StuffIt archive. StuffIt is a “shareware” utility program for file compression. Double-click on the "MacOberon.sit" icon to start the StuffIt application, then choose the "unpack" option. This will create a folder containing all of the files that the MacOberon system is made up of. These files must stay together in the same folder always. MacOberon does not recognize files residing in folders other than the one which contains the MacOberon application.
Starting MacOberon
The Oberon folder contains the MacOberon application program and many Oberon modules. MacOberon is started by double-clicking on the icon of any of these files from the Macintosh Finder.
Due to a conceptual error in MultiFinder and the System 7 Finder, MacOberon runs much slower when its folder is opened on the desktop. You will get much better performance if you run MacOberon from a closed folder. Under System 7, you should define an alias for the MacOberon application and put that on your desktop. You may then start MacOberon by double-clicking on the alias icon.
